East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), formerly named East China Institute of Chemical Technology, was the first single-subject chemical institute in China through the consolidation of the chemical departments from Jiaotong University, Zhendan University, Datong University, Dongwu University, Jiangnan University and Shandong Institute of Technology during a nation-wide restructuring of the country’s higher education resources in 1952. In 1960 it was defined as one of the national key universities directly subordinated to the Ministry of Higher Education. With the development and construction over the past several decades, the University gradually expanded into a comprehensive university with rich diversity of disciplines including Engineering, Science, Business, Management, Humanities, Law,etc.. In 1993 the university was renamed as East China University of Science and Technology with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In October, 1997, Shanghai Municipal Government also joined the operation of the university. Currently ECUST has been listed as one of the key universities financially supported by the national "Project 211" . In June 2000, the graduate school of ECUST was approved by the Ministry of Education of China and became one of the first twenty-two universities under the Self-admission program in China.

      ECUST has three campuses now, located respectively in Xuhui District,  Jinshan District and  Fengxian District which is in the region of Shanghai Touring Bay and still under construction. As one of Shanghai’s Garden Units, the university has beautiful campuses, occupying an area of more than1.639 million square meters in total with elegant environment and greenery scenery. Buildings on the campuses cover about 513 thousand square meters, including some standard physical training establishments like gymnasium, swimming pool , plastic ground track field and so on. The university library possesses 2.5 million books, 18,000 kinds of periodicals, some 44 kinds of CD data-base like CA & EI and the complete USA patent minimized films. ECUST is the head of information cooperation networks among Academics of Chemical Technology around China, the Shanghai branch of Beijing Library CD Information Center, the Workstation of Scientific Program Consultation and Innovation Investigation Center of the Education Ministry, the Center of Foreign Language Textbooks in Shanghai etc. Its Analyzing & Testing Center and Jewellery Inspecting Center is national authorized computation & attestation centers.
